Welcome to the Watervliet Police Department

The Watervliet Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency proudly serving the the City of Watervliet, New York since 1870. In addition to the Chief of Police, the department’s leadership team consists of a Lieutenant and eight sergeants. The department includes an Operations and Investigations and Support Division. In addition, the department staffing includes detectives, field intelligence officer, public information officer, evidence technicians, animal control officer, school resource officer and community support officer. Non-sworn members consist of a confidential assistant to the chief, discovery coordinator, crossing guards and traffic light engineers.

Operations Division

The Operations Division consists of the following: Patrol, Animal Control Officer, School Resource Officer and Discovery Coordinator

Officers are deployed in mobile patrols, foot and bicycle to serve those who live, work and visit Watervliet. Officers assigned to the Operations Division are the core of the department, handling thousands of calls for service each year. In between responding to calls and proactively patrolling, members can also be seen engaging with community members throughout the neighborhoods of Watervliet.

Investigations & Support Division

The Investigations and Support Division consists of the following: Criminal Investigation Unit, Federal Task Force Officers, Community Support Unit, Evidence Technicians, Field Intelligence Officer, Public Information Officer, Training Unit, Equinox Domestic Violence Advocate and Policy Review Committee.

Members assigned to the Investigations and Support Division often work collaboratively with various entities to help provide our community with the highest level of law enforcement services.

The City of Watervliet Police Department is located at 2-15th Street. The Police Department is in the same building as the City Hall.

Call the Police Department’s non-emergency number, 518-270-3833, to register your complaint. The complaint will be turned over to the Patrol Operations Supervisor, who will assign a patrol unit to your neighborhood in an attempt to solve the problem. We may send the radar trailer to the street for a day as a reminder to drivers in your area.

To help avert potential tragedy, the Watervliet Police are requesting that anyone who is aware of an underage drinking party taking place contact them at 518-270-3833. All calls received will be treated in the strictest of confidence. So don’t be afraid to call. Your call could save a life.

The City of Watervliet does in fact have a noise ordinance. Chapter 197 of the Watervliet City Code of Ordinances was written with the intent to prevent any unreasonably loud, disturbing, and/or unnecessary noise. Residents are prohibited from performing or enabling acts in which would cause loud, disturbing, and unnecessary noise that would, in turn, disrupt public peace and comfort. Residents are prohibited from operating any device designed to amplify sounds or voices outside any premises or through any opening such as a door or window of said premises, which would disturb public peace or comfort.

Does this include barking dogs? Residents must ensure any animals in their household do not cause frequent or long-continued noise which disturbs the comfort of persons in the vicinity.

Construction? Construction that causes undue noise and disturbance other than between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm on weekdays is prohibited, unless in urgent or emergency situations.

Does the Noise Ordinance take effect at a specific time of day? The noise ordinance is in effect and can be enforced at any time of day, and is not limited to the evening hours.

Are their repercussions for violating the Noise Ordinance? In order for legal recourse to result, such noise must be detrimental to the life or health of any individual or must be contrary to public welfare. If so, an appearance ticket can be issued to the individual violating the said ordinance. The violator would be scheduled to appear in Watervliet City Court. Potential fines shall not exceed $500.

Copies of reports are available five (5) business days after the report is taken. A Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request must be filled out and submitted to the City Clerk’s office between 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. There is a $0.25 charge per page.  Go Here for a copy of the FOIL request . This request can be faxed to the City Clerk’s office at 518-270-3844. Please make sure a phone number is listed on the request as you will be contacted once the report is ready. This report must be picked up in person.

Citizens often call the police department in regards to matters that must be addressed by the court. The police cannot confirm or change the date of a court appearance or adjust a fine or dismiss charges against a defendant. All such issues must be directed to Court personnel at 518-453-5550.

No, department policy prohibits responding to such inquiries.

You have 10 days to make a payment or enter a plea. A payment must be received by mail or in person at the Watervliet Finance Department located in City Hall (Mon-Fri, 9a-2p). DO NOT mail cash. Make check or money order payable to the City of Watervliet.

To plead NOT GUILTY: Please appear at Watervliet City Court (Mon-Fri at 8am). A failure to respond to a parking ticket may result in the issuance of an arrest warrant.
